Paying it Forward: My School of Hard Knocks Story

May 2nd, 2012

ZOMG! ALL THE ORPHANS!!!

I haven’t been much of an acheivement whore during my time in WoW, and really, if it comes right down to it, THIS ONE was the reason why! I guess it comes down to the fact that it intimidated me.  And since “I’d NEVER get it,” why bother on the rest? Right?

For those of you not familiar with this acheivement, it requires you to do a few things in PVP Battlegrounds with your Orphan out during the Childrens’ Week Event:

- Warsong Gulch: Return a Dropped Flag
- Arathi Basin: Assault a Base Flag
- Alterac Valley: Assault a Tower
- Eye of the Storm: Capture a Flag

And not being the type to really play PVP all that often, this intimidated the hell outta me! I mean it REALLY. Intimidated. the HELL. outta me!

So if it was such a big deal, why the change and attempt it, you ask? I’m not sure, to tell the truth. But if you read my update last week, I looked Channi up on the Armory and didn’t like being in 6th place, so I tried to up my ranking. I’m currently in 4th place, and have over 1000 points to go in order to get into 3rd. Aside from working professions, and trying for Loremaster, one of the things I needed to make up points, is “Long Strange Trip,” and all the events that make it up. And Children’s week just happened at the right time, I guess!

So Channi here is my Second Ever Character, and really the main voice in my head for RP purposes.  I’ve been playing her since Vanilla, and I apparently never did any acheivement related things on her for Children’s week. (Correction: I found I had the Frenzyheart Pup already, so I did the Dalaran event at least once!)  Ok, Fresh start, not a Problem. I can Dooo Eeeet! I picked up Channi’s first Orphan in Stormwind and completed all his quests, and picked up Speedy the Turtle as a Companion! (Oh yeah, moar companion pets for Acheivements too!) I then picked up the Orphan Dreanei in Shattrath and decided I delayed enough, and the School of Hard Knocks was the last thing I needed for the acheivement.

What I SHOULD Have done was re-read @WoWCynwise’s wonderful Guide to the School of Hard Knocks. But I didn’t…. >.> I just jumped in and ran with it.  Everything worked out for me though, so no worries!

First up was “Return a Dropped Flag in Warsong Gulch” – I’ve heard about BG’s that tried to work together to get the acheivement and hoped that would be the case. Not my first run. It was a slug fest despite people on both sides having their Orphans out. The good news was that we won 3-0! So I queued up again, and this time hung out in the Flag Room with my Orphan out. As luck would have it, the Tauren Druid that came to take our flag was one of the helpful types! He dropped in on top of the flag and repeatedly picked it up and dropped it for everyone in the flag room. I stopped attacking him as I realized what was going on and quickly returned a Flag and logged out of there before it got nasty again! (Yeah, I’m an acheivement desserter, so what!)

Next up was “Assault a Flag in Arathi Basin” – As I had the Desserter debuff on me, I did some fishing for a while until I realized could have gone back in an hour ago! Then queued for AB. I came into an AB already in Progress, and attempted the BS, but the Hordies weren’t having anything to do with that! So I went to LM, and helped defend. Somehow I ended up being the only one there and lo and behold a couple Hordies came up and took LM. As I respawned, I was able to take advantage of the others that came up to take it back and was able to get this part of the achievement as well! This time I stuck it out as we were on track to win and came out with a few extra honor points, and avoided the debuff as well.  Two down! Two to go!

Now was a tough decision to make… Eye of the Storm which I think I’d been in maybe twice before when it was new… or AV that is usually pretty easy to do? Might as well get the harder one out of the way first. I went for Eye of the Storm.

Did I mention it was going to be harder? I rode straight out to the middle and grabbed the flag. Others ran to a base and capped it while I was on route with the flag and Lo’ and Behold, BAM! Flag capped!  I stuck this one out as well and then it was easy peasey AV for complete the Event and get my title!  This was going to be a cinch!

Only not.  EVERYONE Was working on that acheivement…! (See the Picture at the top of this post! DAMN That’s a Lot of Orphans!)  We won the AV, but I didn’t get anywhere NEAR assaulting a tower.  The Good news was that I found @Arrens’ One Fan in there!

Of all the Battlgrounds Joints in all of the World of Warcraft, you had to walk into mine...

In my second one however, When I got to the tower, there was a Lone Hordie in there just recapping the tower after each of us assaulted it! Acheivement Complete!

Many Thanks to whoever you helpful Hordies were! It takes a strength of character that you don’t see everyday to be able to help others get their goals accomplished. Especially when there is the communication barrier AND we are supposed to be FIGHTING EACHOTHER in order to complete them!

So what Have I learned by doing this?  A – Always Read Cynwise’s posts before attempting anything PVP Related!  And B – Don’t sweat it.  You REALLY CAN do this!  I made the mistake of looking at it as “PVP CRAP” and let it overwhelm me before I even set foot in there.  Sometimes it’s just best to jump in with both feet and Just DO it!  And it can be fun in the process to boot!

And that got me thinking, It takes a lot of teamwork to do things like this. On both sides of the faction divide. Without the help of a couple of random players on the opposing side, I wouldn’t be writing this post right now. That bears recognition. The best recognition I can think of (since I forgot to note their names/realms, like a baddie) is to pay it forward. And maybe later on down the line, someone else will do the same thing again. And again….

That’s it for me for now.  Good luck to you in your achievements!  YOU CAN DOOOO EEET!

Thanks for stopping by!

Returner – Part 2

April 26th, 2012

(For Part 1, See THIS POST. Thanks for coming! Enjoy!)

Voices. Distant… No. Muffled. A woman’s voice, with power, and a slight accent, “…will live, but…”

Another’s voice, familiar, also female with the same accent, but with a slower cadence, “… was lucky you caught her…”

And then a male’s voice… very familiar, as if she had just spoken to him, yes. Nozdormu. What’s he saying? His low voice doesn’t carry as well…. something about the “..Infinite Dragonflight… … an interest in her….”

Her? You mean me? And then the darkness called to her again.

She had no frame of reference as to how long she was unconcious, and when in the realm of the Bronze Dragonflight, Time was sometimes irrelavent.

She awoke to find herself in an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar room. There was a presence in the room with her, this she knew from instinct before she even opened her eyes. When her eyes finally focused, she could make out that the room was lit by a single candle on a table not far away. She didn’t recognize the room or furnishings, but she did see her armor and blades were on a chair by the table with the candle. That was a comfort to her.  It was a sign that she was among allies, if not friends.

In another chair on the farside of the table sat a small female gnome dressed in priest robes reading from what appeared to be a large leatherbound tome. She looked up at Channi and smiled.

“It’s good to see you again, Channi. Or is this the first time we met? It gets so confusing sometimes! I’m Chromie!” She said enthusiastically. “The others will be glad to hear you’ve woken up!”

She hopped down from the chair and stepped outside the door for a moment and spoke softly to someone before coming back to her bedside. “You gave us quite a scare there, little one.” She climbed up and sat next to the Human girl and touched the back of her hand to Channi’s Forehead and then her cheek to feel for a fever. “It’s been a couple days for you. Can I get you some water or food?” She genuinely seemed concerned for her well being.

Channi was still gathering her wits about her and realized she lacked the strength to do more than nod and grunt a weak, “Please. Water…”

The diminutive dragonkin smiled warmly at her as she scrambled back to the table and poured a small glass of water. She uttered a quiet spell and floated back to Channi’s side and raised the glass to Channi’s lips. Channi sipped from the glass and relished the coolness of the liquid in her mouth. After her first sip, she tried to drink more, faster, but ended up coughing as she rushed it.

“Whoa there! Take it easy, take it slow. You’ve been through quite a lot and need to pace yourself.” She gestured toward the table and a small towel rushed to her hand to dab at the water Channi coughed up. “There you go…. now once again… small sips this time.”

Through an effort of will, Channi managed to follow the suggestion and took a couple more small sips. The difference it made in her was measurable. “Th-thank you,” she said, humbled by being waited on by someone as high ranked as Chronormu was in the Bronze Dragonflight.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway as the familiar figures of Nozdormu and Alexstrasza came into her room. Relief shown on their faces as they saw her sipping from the glass of water.

“Don’t try to move, Channi” Nozdormu said as she tried to sit up higher. “Save your strength.” She relaxed and laid her head back on the pillow behind her head and listened.

“She just woke up, Sir!” said Chromie. “Earlier than expected, too!”

Alexstrasza nodded and stood next to the bed. She placed a cool hand on Channi’s forehead and then chanted a short spell causing it to pass a warmth into Channi that seemed to clear her mind. She lifted her hand and passed it a foot or so over Channi’s body, down to her feet, and then waved it off. As the Life-Binder’s hand passed over her, she felt herself reinvigorated. “There, that should do it,” said the Life-Binder. “You posess a strong spirit, and that will help you recuperate.”

Channi nodded her thanks. “I-I’m sorry to have put you through so much trouble… What happened anyway? I … I remember passing into the portal.. and then…”

Nozdormu replied, “We are not entirely sure, but we believe The Infinite Dragonflight was responsible. We don’t know why, yet. But your timeline has been closed to you, and it was all I could do to bring you to this one.”

“My… Timeline..? What do you mean, I can’t go back? Can it be reop..”

The Aspect of Time raised his hand gently to interrupt the confused Rogue. “Things are still being investigated, and we will let you know as we learn more. But at this point, you should be safe. They do not know that you survived, so should not be looking for you in this timeline.”

Alexstrasza joined in, “I’m sure you have more questions. Chromie will tell you more about where, or rather ‘when’ you are in the morning. But for now, you should rest some more.”

“But what about…?” Channi started.

“Nuh uh uh! You heard the Lady!” Chromie interrupted. “Rest now! I’ll see you in the morning!” she said with a wink. With that, Chomie took the glass and set it on the bedside table, within easy reach and tucked the young human back into bed.

“You are in good hands, Miss Woods,” the Life-Binder said. “But we must be going.”

Nozdormu nodded, “We had to make sure you survived, but there are still other matters to attend to.” He gave her a reassuring smile and gently squeezed her foot through the blankets before turning to leave.

Chromie grabbed her book looked back to the girl. “If there is anything else you need, I’ll be right outside the door.”

“I… I’ll be ok,” Channi said as she smiled a thank you.

Chromie blew out the candle before heading to the room beyond and closing the door to just a crack.

Thoughts and questions swirled in Channi’s head in the dark. Chief among them was being thankful for all the Aspects have done for her. It was very humbling to have the Aspects take such an interest in just a lone human girl. And questions of what exactly happened, and why? And what about her Family? Would she ever see Loreli and Zane again? Everyone she knew…

Eventually sleep overcame her and brought with it the bliss of a dreamless oblivion.

Returner – Part 1

April 25th, 2012

Yesterday, I mentioned that I wanted to bring my Rogue back to RP, but her timeline has already been taken over by the Deathknight. This is my attempt to work around that technicality.

I can probably get more detailed, but this is only a blog! It’s not like this is for NANOWRIMO or anything!

Anyway, let me know what you think! Thanks!
****************************************************

Channi was exausted. It was a well earned exhaustion, and she still had a bit of a high from all the adrenaline, but she was coming down fast.

It started as a call to the Caverns of Time by Thrall, and ended up being the fight of a lifetime against Deathwing, the World Destroyer Himself! But he was dead finally, a threat to the world no longer, and as the Aspects put it, the Dawning of the Age of Mortals.

She had done her part, and for that, she had been able to collect a Fragement of His Jaw for her own reasons. But now it was done. Time to head home.

As a Rogue, she took it upon herself to scout the vicinity where ever she went. And as part of a Group such as this, she would reach the portal first, but wait until last to keep an eye on her group’s surroundings in case there was a threat that was missed and wanted to exact some sort of revenge. Finally, all others were through the portal and Nozdormu called to her to finally leave this place.

“Channi? It is time.”

She stopped in front of the Tall Elven Aspect in front of her, and curtsied as best she could. “Thank you, sir. It was an Honor to assist you and the other Aspects.”

He smiled at her, “The honor was ours for having you here. Without you and your fellow Champions, there would not have been any hope for our world. Thank YOU, young human.” He smiled warmly at the young girl as she blushed at his words. After all she’s been through and done, to still be humble like this… It’s good to see that in person, especially at so young an age.

She dutifully saluted, then turned and stepped into the Portal that was waiting to take her home.

Travel by portals is not something easily accustomed to. The Lights… The Sounds… The twisting and pulling of body and mind through the Nether between what is and what was… It was something she was willing to endure as needed, but she felt much more comfortable on the back of a Gryphon or on her mare, Jezzebel.

There. That should be her destination now…. It’s not really something she can see, but more FEEL deep in her being as the place she was drawn towards, where she belonged. But wait… something wasn’t right. There is a Dark Edge to the portal exit… something she had never experienced before… And Cold… so Very Cold…

“Wait… NO…!!!” her mind screamed as pain from her most inner core blinded her as her very Being was torn away from her. She could feel herself being scattered throughout the Nether…

Then as quickly as it had started, it stopped. There was a soft warmth that reached out to her. Then the Blackness took her.

Falling in Love, all over again…!

April 24th, 2012

No I'm not trying to "Date My Avatar," but then again, how could you NOT want to...?

Ever since I got my early access to SWTOR, I’ve pretty much been non-existant here. This goes for WoW in general as well as the Blog. A good portion of this was playing SWTOR, but there have been other things that have come in the way of my WoW Time. Most importantly, my son is failing all his classes, Save ROTC. As a result, I get to sit with him and work on Homework till 9:00 everynight. Consequently, this has cut down on ALL of my Gaming time. :-/

Thursdays are my Raid nights, so one night a week, he gets a repreive so I can tear up Dragon Soul and work on advancing my Daggers! As of now, I have the second stage of the daggers and am currently in my second full week of collecting the Full Sized Gem Clusters. If things continue as they are going, on June 7, I should collect my last gem cluster off Morchok, and during our break, I can go turn that in to get the last stage to kill Deathwing! Once we do that, I’ll hopefully be able to get a portal to Ironforge, and then fly to Ravenholdt with as many of the raid group that wants to come with me to turn in the final stage and get my Legendaries!

To tell you the truth, I liked to entertain the fact that I’d get them, but I didn’t think I’d be the first in our core circle of friends on Feathermoon! (Maybe I’m not the first, but no one has told me about any of our friends getting them yet. Then again, I don’t have many friends…>.>) And I can’t thank my Raid group enough for letting me swap from my tanking role to my Rogue so I can do this! Not only do I get to complete my first Legendaries, but it’s while the Legendaries are still relevant! (Anyone got a release date for MOP? With my luck, it will be the week after!)

I think progressing this is a BIG part of why I’m loving WoW once again, but it’s not only that. There are other things that have cropped up for me that I have found, that seem to be adding to my enjoyment of the game that much more.

- ACHEESEment Points!: I’ve not been the biggest on acheivements in the past, but I noticed that when I look up my armory, I was at number 6, and didn’t like having to scroll that far south on the list to find myself! How is it ranked? By your Acheivement points! So I looked at what I had for points vs the others ahead of me and found that with just a couple days worth of exploration and BC Heroics, I could get myself into 4th place! To get into third, I’m going to have to force myself to level my fishing and maybe some PVP. But it’s doable!

- Transmog sets: While working on the BC Heroics, certain items dropped and I just had to collect the rest of the Assassination Armor set for Transmog, and there are a couple other sets I might work on later as well. This is on top of her T9 Set that I seriously can’t get enough of! OH GODS! WHERE DOES IT END?!?!?!? ( It doesn’t… All Your Bank belong to Transmog!)

- Arr Pee!: Yes I dabble in teh RP occasionally, but lately hadn’t been able to get the bug. I currently have the DK, and Zane but haven’t really had much time to get them involved in things. (See Paragraph 2 for reasons why…) When we moved to this server, instead of paying the $25 to move my rogue, I started a new DK and forever changed the RP Role of Channi as a newly turned Deathknight. It wasn’t until much later that I finally moved the Rogue over from Argent Dawn, and now she’s chomping at the bit to come back out and Play! So with a little finagling, I figure there is something bad that happens in her original timeline while she’s in the Caverns of Time, and Nozdormu brings her to this timeline instead with a warning that things here are not like they were in her original timeline. Insert meeting “Momma Lore” again as a living breathing person again, as well as her DK incarnation (along with her lover) and see what happens! I’ll still have to make the time, but teh STORIEZ! THEY ARE BURBLING AROUND IN MAH HEAD! LET THEM OUT!

Spectral Horse Mount from Tol Barad: I spent damn near a month running TB Dailies to get the Dragon mount last year and had enough! But with the Rogue coming more to the forefront of my playtime, I find myself wanting the Spectral Horse mount as well. So yeah, now I’m back to killing giant spiders, and stealing fish, and killing suspicious villagers (Seriously, if everytime new people came along, they tried to kill you and the rest of your fellow villagers off, wouldn’t you be suspicious too?) and of course killing every Baradin Fox I see hoping to get a Fox Kit! About 3 more weeks and I should have enough TB marks to get the Horse, and then I can forget about this place FOREVER!!!! (unless I still need a Fox Kit…>.> )

And here is where I look back on these things and see a common theme: Goals. Things that I want to accomplish, and have a pretty damn good chance of completing! (Except for the Fox Kit, of course!) This is what I enjoy about this game. Being able to set goals and follow them to completion. SWTOR, has some goals, but they just aren’t very well defined after hitting 50. Maybe I just don’t have enough time in that game, but the way I see it, even in my early days of WoW, I knew there was something I wanted just around the corner at Level 13 (Aspect of the Pack), level 40(My first Mount), level 60(Epic mount/gearing up for Raids/Endgame content). In BC, Keys for Heroic Content, Flying mounts. Wrath had a whole crapton of story to consume! Plus cooking was suddenly VERY good for you, and Epic flight was affordable/acheiveable, not to mention Dual Specs! And Reputations were needed for EVERYTHING! In Cataclysm, I was able to work tons of Professions to max, and ALL THE ALTS. And now the Daggers, and… well I’m not going back over what I’ve written above!

Suffice to say, I think that’s something that WoW has done well. At least for me. Giving me options on what goals I want to acheive. And making most of them acheivable! (as long as you put in the time!)

Don’t get me wrong, I still love SWTOR, but… it’s more of a platonic love. I mean, waiting till my Consular hit her 30′s before she met her love interest was a little late in the game. I mean, by that time, she feel like a nun! >.>

So yeah, I’m falling back in love with WoW. It was bound to happen again, just a matter of when. No, you aren’t going to find me in Goldshire, but when I’m on, you will find me working on things and having some fun with it.

For now though, I have to get these TB Dailies taken care of. Not to mention my Son’s Geometry!

That’s it for today. Thanks for stopping by!

NERD POINTS!

March 16th, 2012

DEATHWING DOWN!

10 man Regular - Much more satisfying than LFR!

We had been getting to him regularly for the past month, but at the end of the night I have a feeling we are getting kinda tired from all the other encounters.  So this week, we extended our lockout from last week and within an hour, We Got Him!

I was looking at how much health he had, saw what looked like 4 people down including at least one of the healers and our Main Tank, popped a couple defensive cooldowns when the Fragments came up again and heard in Vent, “Just Ignore them… Keep on Deathwing!”  He was at 2.4 Million Health and then all of a sudden….  ”BONG!” ACHEIVEMENT!  First thing I said was “Did we just…?”  and then Vent erupted in cheers!  It was great!

Then we checked loot and it was a pair of casty daggers…. -_-;;  The SAME ONE TWICE!  I don’t even remember which one it was and I’m too lazy to look it up right now.  But I can look past that because we finally downed him!

Once we were done there, we decided to hit up the last boss in BH as we still had it for another 20 minutes.  Took her down and left the instance just as the zone was getting ready to kick us out!  There’s timing for you!

Then for S&G, we decided to give Firelands a quick Shakedown, as we never did take down Rags.  My Rogue finally set foot in there for the first time, looking for Transmog gear, but unfortunately the shoulders and helm did not drop.  When we got to Rags, I swapped back to my DK to tank and it took us 3 pulls, but again, on what was to be our last pull of the night…

AND STAY DOWN!

RAGS DOWN!

So yeah, it was a pretty event filled evening!  I want to thank everyone on the Raid Team for all their efforts!  Lightlance and Corrienda for putting it together and keeping it together!  Without you two leading us week after week, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun as it has been!  I have to say this is the best raid group I’ve ever been a part of and it really comes from you two and your leadership! (I really should get to farming more so you two don’t have to as much…>.>)

Galedorin and Gryphonheart – When Corri and LL can’t be there for any reason, you two step up and help make things happen.  Not to mention calling things out week after week.  You two are great!

Lusy and Ashalla – Even though you two don’t have mic’s you are there every week and help keep us going!  Lusy with the Sky High DPS and Diamonds on her head.  And Ashalla Healing and Bubbling me through standing in Bad. (>.>)  I still think the two of you are celebrities that just don’t want to be identified…!  ^_~

Wildlark – From Multiboxing RP’s to Helping Down these raid bosses!  You do it all…. even if you run mostly Druids and Hunters only…!  It’s still great to be able to raid with someone you RP with, too!

Mustiika – You and your CRAZY HAX Loot Rolls!  Even if your dice may have been cold the past couple weeks, your DPS is always Smokin’ HOT!

Domin – Always available to sub in for us, you’ve become a good luck charm as well!  Thanks for being there and helping out!  Arms DPS truly is Hax!

Everyone else that has subbed for us in the past, Thank you to you as well!

And lastly, Silmiron who unfortunately wasn’t able to be there last night due to Hotel Internet and game patching shenanigans.  Always there, always open to suggest new things.  Willing to swap to your healer on many occasions as needed.  Your dedication to helping us progress is mirrored in all of us.

To put all of this succinctly, THANK YOU ALL!  You are what keep me coming back to this game and hoping that I can be as good at is as the rest of you!

Now to work on some dailies of my own…

~ Z/C

PS – So guys…. can I run my Rogue some more for Gem Clusters?  I’d really like to progress these daggers! ^_^

Trying to make sense of it all…!

February 4th, 2012

It’s been a while since I last posted… yes I know.  I haven’t forgotten about a revisit to the Item Squish, but I just haven’t had time to finalize my numbers and making sure they balance out.  RL has been REALLY getting to me and I’m extremely busy at work.  I just haven’t had time to keep up here.  In any case, I do apologize for not updating sooner.

I have first stage Daggers! Be afraid! Be VERY Afraid!

So news… LOTS of it!  4.3. has been released (almost 2 months ago!), and with it, Legendary Daggers for Rogues!  I have been lucky that my Raid is allowing me to bring my Rogue to collect the Shadowy Gems, but the problem is I can only bring the rogue for bosses we can Farm.  So the first half of the Raid.  Once we reach Ultraxion, Out comes my DK Tank.  I’m also at the bottom of the pecking order for new gear while I’m on my Rogue.  And with 5 other people that can use the same tier tokens, that’s a long wait for upgrades! BUT!  Even doing it this way, I am 136 Shadowy Gems into the first stage of the dagger questline!  Only 217 more to go!

The good news is that I am collecting VP from each boss kill, and I have run LFR a few times, so I think I have a 2-pc T13 bonus and a couple VP Armor items.  So I’m not complaining about lack of gear for the rogue.  BUT… the flip side to this is I have limited chances to get upgrades for my tank.  I was lucky enough to get the T-13 Chest this past week, and had enough VP for a helm, and then had Pants and Bracers crafted for her, so I’m thinking she’s doing OK now. Before that, I kept feeling like I might be hindering the raid with lack of gear. Thankfully, since the just nerfed things with 4.3.2, we went from wiping on the ship, to going 7 of 8! WE CAN DO EEEETT!

In OTHER news:  Star Wars: The Old Republic was also released about a month ago and I have found that to be Really Fun!  Part of it is the Whole new story line and Lore!  And each class has its own story line to be told as well!  Part of the draw are the cut scenes for most every quest.  Part of it is being able to SHARE in those cut scenes with party members and “roll” on which response is given!  AND… part of it is my wife and I FINALLY get to play TOGETHER!

Playing together has Ben something I’ve wanted to do since we first started playing, but events have conspired to keep us from doing that. With SWTOR, there is no end game pressures just yet, so we just get to log in and do our own thing together.

Eventually, I’ll start posting about my experiences in SWTOR, but not just now.

One last bit of news, I just got my Diablo 3 Beta invite so I’m pretty busy on all fronts right now! I’ll have to take a closer look at the Beta agreement, but I don’t recall seeing anything in there that said I couldn’t talk about it. I’ll verify that before I bring up anything specific. I will say that I do like what I see, however!

That’s it for this post. I just wanted to drop a line here and let everyone know that I haven’t exactly fallen off the face of the planet! I’m still here, but somethings take priority over posting. Unless someone wants to give me a job doing this… then all bets are off!

But until THAT happens, I’ll just have to keep on those dailies!

TTFN!

To Squish? Or not to Squish? That is the QQ!

November 15th, 2011

So Ghostcrawler has issued another Blogpost talking about the “Great Item Squish” that may or may not happen with MoP.  To tell you the truth, I had a feeling something like this was going to be necessary eventually when BC came out and all our Hard Earned Epics(tm) were getting replaced with Quest Greens(tm).   I just didn’t know how far out we’d be able to go with the gear levels before someone decided it was broken.  And then Wrath came out and continued the trend.  And Cataclysm compounded it even further.  Maybe it’s not broken YET, but looking at the graphs Ghostcrawler posted, it’s certainly close!

(c) Blizzard Entertainment 2011

That chart above shows a part of the story.  But it’s not all of it.  Item levels are rising, yes, but how does it relate to the content?  To answer that question I put together this chart below to show how each tier related to your Character Level, and how they compared to each other within that Level Cap:

Relative Gear Level to Character Level Ratios

In this chart above, you will see the Tier level at the bottom, the relative Character level just above that, the iLvl of the Gear in that Tier above that, and on the top line, the value of the gear in relation to the character’s level that would ideally be using that set.  For this exercise, I used gear that I’m most familiar with over the history of the game – Rogue gear.  Other classes may vary slightly , but not by much.  (And if they do, it would be in the lower levels anyway.)  So Looking at the Tier 1 Set (Nightslayer), being iLvl 66  is a 1.1:1 ratio vs the character’s level of 60.  You can see that as you move further along in the chart, the higher the ratio becomes.

Relative Gear Level vs Character Level Graph

Here’s another look at these Ratios.  This one isn’t as bad as Ghostcrawler’s chart, but it does show the ratios relative to each other.  And each time we receive a new tier, that Ratio increases.  At this rate, at level 90, we’d be looking at ratios pushing 6:1 and item levels well over 500 by the time the Expansion following MoP was ready for release.

So what’s the problem?  Gear is supposed to scale with level, right?  Yes, it is… but  the higher the gear score, the bigger the numbers.  The bigger the numbers, the more computations are needed to resolve combat.  The more computations required, the more processing power that is needed locally on your system at home (ie –  more cost to you to keep your systems upgraded) as well as server-side, meaning higher cost to Blizzard for better servers.  AND the more bandwidth required to communicate all this added information needed because of the higher gear scores.  And that is a whole ‘nother can of worms altogether!

So what can be done about it?  Well Ghostcrawler alluded to squishing things with MoP,  and there are a couple of ways of going about that.  You can squish the numbers so instead of 10,000,000 Health, it would be considered 10,000K Health.  That could essentially remove 3 decimal places off the computation, but that brings to mind how that would affect new characters?  They start off with less than 200 health.  We would need a bit more explanation from Blizzard to see exactly where they would go with this IF they decided to do this.

Alternatively, we can flatten out the curve between Tiers.  The chart and graphs above show that our Gear Levels have been improving at an INCREASING RATE.  So every Tier level, our Gear Levels not only go up, but they INCREASE how much they go up even further than your normal progression would have taken you.  Instead of having everything improve at an increasing rate, we can flatten out the curve.  How much we flatten it out is the REAL question.  Ghostcrawler posted this graph showing a prospective Squish of Item Levels that shows a little of what he’s talking about:

(C) Blizzard Entertainment 2011

So how far to Flatten them?  Well according to the chart above, it looks like they are considering taking the Vanilla WoW 1:1 ratio and increasing the Gear Levels for the respective tiers, albeit not quite as much as they used to.  So that means at level 80, your gear would be level 80 as well.  That also means that the Tier 3 gear you may or may not have in your bank won’t necessarily still be iLvl 92 and still be usable up till you make it to MoP Heroics!  No, all current and past gear would also be “Squished” and all content would have to be retuned to match.  This includes not only Creatures and Bosses, but Enchants, Gems, Spells, Weapon Damage, etc., ad nauseum…

What does it matter what my gear iLvl is anyway?  To know this, we have to have an understanding of what your gear “iLvl” really is.  It’s not just a measuring stick for ePeen!  No, your gear iLvl is a rating given to your gear based on the values of the stats you gain from that item.  Every point of a Primary stat like Int or Str or Agi has a certain amount of value given to it.  Every secondary stat such as Crit or Hit or Mastery has another value.  Each point you have in these stats adds to the value of the iLvl of your gear.  That means, if your item levels get “squished,” then all your lovely combat stats get squished as well!

What does this mean?  I wont be able to solo Kara anymore?  If this is what they ended up doing, that would probably be the end result, yes.  You can probably 5 man it easily enough, though.  However, this may not be what they are going to do.  This is not carved in Stone, nor was it pulled from a burning bush.  This is just a theoretical approach to the issue at hand.  (And I’d REALLY like to know how you solo Chess..>.> )

So what happens now?  A very good question, and it’s one that only those behind the gilded gates in Irvine could say for sure.  But I believe the point Ghostcrawler was trying to make in his original post was to let us know what they are trying to balance out for the future, while still keeping the game enjoyable in the present, AND to see if anyone could give constructive feedback and maybe, just maybe, give them an idea that they hadn’t thought of yet.  (Outsourcing Techniques by Ghostcrawler!)

So that’s where WE come in.  The Players.  This WoW Community that just so happens to have a few MILLION people in it!  Maybe something we’ve experienced in the past or some Random thought we’ve had since reading their post might be able to help.  Maybe.

I was originally going to show what I’d like to see for a fix, but I seem to have run long on this topic already.  So I’ll follow up later in the week showing my suggestion.  If you have any ideas or thoughts on the subject, please feel free to comment below.

In the mean time, keep up on those Dailies!  With the patch coming up anytime now, we are going to need that money for our upgrades!

Mists of Pandaria Talent Preview: Warrior

November 10th, 2011

“Strong as Brick!  Tough as Brick!  SMAAARRRT as Brick!” Probably one of the most basic classes for any RPG:  The Plate Wearing, Face Bashing, Door Breaking,  Brick!

(C) Blizzard Entertainment 2011

I once tried my hand at a Warrior in early BC, but couldn’t get him above level 24.  Part of it was the Male Draenei voice and animations, part was pure boredom.  But I recently rolled a Warrior for a short RP Scenario, and was pleasantly surprised by the streamlining Blizzard had done for Cataclysm.  I have since rolled a new warrior that is intended to be leveled, but at level 18 I’m starting to think about maybe pausing his progress and Twinking him for a bit.  I’ll probably just roll a new toon to twink with, but the option is still there for me.

But enough about my inability to make up my mind on things, you want Talents!  So Talents are what you shall have!

First Tier Talents

When I think of warriors in WoW, there are two moves I think of.  This is the second one…  “Charge!” Warriors, be they Tanks or DPS, they all LOVE to Charge their targets!  This tier gives you a little personal touch to your signature move:

Juggernaut – Will allow you to charge every 12 seconds, instead of 20.  More Charges, More Often!  (Kinda like my cell phone battery..>.> )

Double Time – Will let you charge TWICE before incurring the normal cooldown.  My only issue with this is what if I charge once, and then at 2 seconds past the normal cooldown, charge again?  Will that set the cooldown off?  Or does it give you two cooldown timers much like Deathknight Runes?  We’ll have to see.

Warbringer – Your Charge will Root your target for 5 seconds.  I see this a definite must in PVP, but there are certain times it is also good to have in PVE.

Second Tier Talents

The Second Tier is about your Self Heals:

Enraged Regeneration – Will regenerate 30% of your total health over 10 seconds.  Must be Enraged to use.  What it doesn’t say is if you use Rage the way Frenzied Regeneration does for Bear-tanks.  Hopefully Frenzied Regeneration gets tweaked to match. 3 Minute Cooldown.

Second Wind – This seems to be the Tank talent AND PVP Talent all Warriors will want: Generate rage and Health when struck by a stunning attack, AND anytime you take direct damage, have a 10% chance to generate 5% of your total health over 3 seconds!

Impending Victory – You can use your Victory Rush at anytime, but it will have a 30 second cooldown, and cost 20 Rage.  If it didn’t cost 1/5th of your Rage Bar, this would be a great ability to use on every cooldown.  But sometimes it’s hard to keep that “red mana bar” full…  >.>

Third Tier Talents

The Third Tier is about Crowd Control and Slows:

Throwdown – Knocks your target to the ground for 5 seconds. 45 second cooldown.

Piercing Howl – Dazes all enemies within 10 yards slowing their movement speed by 50% for 6 seconds.  No Cooldown Listed, but I’m sure that will change.

Cripple – When you hit with an Autoattack,or when your Rend Ticks, it will Maim your target, slowing them by 50% for 15 seconds.  If your Rend/Thunderclap combination still spreads your Rend in MoP, then this will be a HUGE  PVP talent!

Fourth Tier Talents

This Tier is about your Interrupts to spell casters:

Gag Order – Pummel and Heroic Throw will silence your target for 3 seconds.

Rude Interruption – Successfully interrupting with Pummel will also increase your damage by 5% for 30 seconds!  Where was this when fighting Shade of Aran?

Disrupting Shout – Interrupts all spells being cast within 10 yards and prevents all spells from that school from being cast for 4 seconds. Definitely a great PVP ability when standing in the middle of the enemy healers!

Fifth Tier Talents

This tier is all about your enrages and causing extra damage to your targets for short bursts:

Deadly Calm – You enter a Battle Trance that allows your next 3 Heroic strikes, or Cleaves to cost no rage.  Lasts for 15 seconds. 2 Minute Cooldown.

Death Wish – No, this isn’t an old Charles Bronson movie, but a 10 second Enrage that lets you generate more Rage from damage received.  However!  And this is a Big However, you will also receive 5% additional damage while in this state.  Not exactly what I’d want my tank to have during a Burn phase…>.>  3 minute Cooldown.

Bull Rush – your Charges and Intervenes will Enrage you for 6 seconds.

Sixth Tier Talents

And finally we come to the Sixth Tier!  This Tier brings with it some tough choices to make…

Bladestorm – no longer just the Arms Warrior’s talent, this is now open to all specs of warriors!  Who doesn’t like the idea of a Deadly spinning Top of Destruction?  1.5 minute Cooldown.

Shockwave – Damage and stun all enemies within a 10 yard Cone in front of you.  I imagine this coming in quite handy picking up Groups of trash mobs as a Tank.  OR using this on the casters grouped up on a Battle ground. 20 Second Cooldown.

Avatar – Transform into a Blue catlike… I mean… um…  Transform into an unstoppable Colossus for 10 seconds increasing your damage by 20% and rage that you generate!  You are also immune to Movement Impairing effects.  AND… it’s only got a 1 minute Cooldown!

**********************

That’s it!  The End!  Finishe!  Finale! Stick a Fork in me, I’m DONE with the Talent Preview!  And to think it only took me 3 weeks to complete it…>.>

I have renewed respect for all the bloggers out there that do this on an almost daily basis.  It’s a lot harder to make the time to do this when it’s just for fun and RL decides it’s going to pop up on a daily basis.  But at least I stuck it out and got them done!  Hopefully I’ve helped someone out there see what is coming up and prepare for the inevitable changes that are coming to us all.

Let me know what you think in the comments, or on twitter.  (@netraven001)  Something besides the usual spam is ALWAYS greatly appreciated!

I do have more coming in the next few days (RL permitting) on some of my own personal updates, as well as the recent Dev Watercooler posted by Ghostcrawler on the great Item Squish of MoP.  I’ll include some Napkin Math(tm) and charts and my own analysis of what has happened throughout the game’s history, and hopefully come up with a suggestion of what to do about it!

Thank you again for coming!  And Keep up on those Dailies!  (They ain’t gonna do themselves’ ya know!)

Mists of Pandaria Talent Preview: Warlock

November 9th, 2011

Warlocks!  Masters of Demons and Hellspawn!  Loathed and untrusted almost as much as Rogues!  And for good reason! *cough*

(C) Blizzard Entertainment 2011

I’ve flirted with Warlocks throughout my WoW experience, but it wasn’t until Cataclysm that I levelled one to Level Cap.  Kyelle has been pretty fun to play with and was my second Raid ready character.  However, no one really needs her for anything, so she’s been relugated to my Alchemy Mule and I sometimes (although not often enough) provide mats for the Cauldons of Battle in my Main’s Raid.

However, I’ve seen her grow quite a bit and she is “On Call” as a Sub in another raid.  We’ll see if I can get my son done with his homework so I might be able to actually be available for that other raid sometime soon!

First Tier Talents

Remember the days of Drain Tanking?  Yeah, it’s still broken, and that makes for some sad, sad Warlocks.  However, this First Tier of Talents help us with our Self Heals:

Dark Regeneration – Instantly restores 50% of our Max Health.  3 minute Cooldown.  Simple and to the point… “Want some Free Health?  HERE!”

Soul Leech - Another health generator, grants 25% of the damage dealt from your Shadowbolt, Incinerate and Malefic Grasp.  Looks to be passive so this would be constant health back to you!  The only question is “What’s Malefic Grasp?”  That wasn’t covered at Blizzcon so it’s bound to be something totally new!

Harvest of Life – Here’s an interesting effect…  It’s a Channelled spell, so you’ll have to sit there casting it for it’s duration.  Luckily it’s only a 3 second Duration.  BUT, if you recast it before it’s duration ends, you boost it’s duration by 3 seconds AND it can stack 5 times!  What does all this mean?  Well the spell, causes Shadow Damage (that I’m sure scales with level) to your target as well as EVERYOTHER Target within 20 yards.  But the real important part of this is that it will heal you for 2% of your total health per target each second!  I can see entire wings being pulled at once!  MUAHAHAHAHAHA..!!!

Second Tier Talents

Warlocks are known for their ability to Chain Fear mobs (and players if you PVP), and this tier is about those Fears:

Howl of Terror - Pretty much the base Spell we have now.  Fear 5 enemies within 10 yards for 8 seconds.

Mortal Coil – This sounds like our Death Coil: causes target to run in fear for 3 seconds and heals us for 25% of our Maximum health.  The only difference is this does not cause damage to your target the way Death Coil does.  With any luck, we get to have BOTH!  Fear All The Things!  XD

Shadowfury - I’ve never played Destro, but the current version of this sounds pretty cool.  This version, takes away the damage it causes, however.  Maybe they will bring the damage back? /shrug.

Third Tier Talents

This Tier is about your Self Preservation abilities:

Hour of Twilight – When you take damage that would bring you below 20% of your maximum health, this will reduce your damage taken by 50% for 10 seconds.  Will not occur more than once every 90 seconds.

Soul Link – Pretty much the same as our current Soul Link.  Shares your damage and healing with your current Demon.

Sacrifical Pact - Instead of just letting you use the Voidwalker to sacrifice itself to protect you, ANY Demon that you are using can be sacrificed to protect you!  As it should be.

Fourth Tier Talents

More Self Preservation… What do you expect?  We’re Warlocks!

Bloodstone - Instantly restores 44% of the Warlock’s base health and increases healing by 50% for 10 seconds.  Let’s hope this doesn’t share a cooldown with our Fel-Cookies.

Spell Drain - The next single target spell focused on you will heal you for half the damage it was supposed to cause.  Lasts for 4 seconds.  This does not state that it must be cast upon a target like Dark Simulacrum does for DK’s, so this can be quite powerful, especially in PVP.  20 second cooldown means this will be cast quite often!

Nether Ward - Transforms your twilight ward nto a Nether Ward.  This will absorb damage over 30 seconds (30 second cooldown as well), and as it absorbs damage, will also reduce damage by that school of magic by 15% for 12 seconds.  Good for AOE heavy fights.

Fifth Tier Talents

What’s a Warlock without their Demons?  A wanna-be Shadow Priest without cool special effects, really…>.>

This Tier is about the Demons!

Grimoire of Supremacy - Gives you STRONGER Demons that deal 10% additional damage and have more powerful abilities!  I want to see exactly what each Demon can do, but check out this list:  Fel Imp, Voidlord, Shivan, Beholder, Abyssal, Terrorguard.  Who wouldn’t want their own Beholder?  Or a Shivan?  (I think this is the big 6 armed demon chicks in Bikinis..? ) Don’t ask what for..  But I hear they make a KILLING in Goldshire… I mean…  *cough*  >.>

Grimoire of Service – Allows you to call out a second demon to fight for 30 seconds.  Great for burn phases!  2 minute Cooldown.

Grimoire of Sacrifice - I don’t think you can use this ability AND Sacrificial Pact at the same time.  So you can sacrifice your pet and get a protective shield from Sacrificial Pact, OR you can sacrifice them and gain extra damage and health!  I’m sure if Demons had a Union, they’d be getting ready to strike right about now…!  “We are Summoned beyond our will!  We are then forced to Fight for these Weenie Clothies and when they get in over their heads they KILL US To Save themselves! We Are the Demon 99%!  OCCUPY AZEROTH!”

Sixth Tier Talents

This Tier was about making choices based on your favorite Demonic Villains!

Archimonde’s Vengeance - Curse an enemy so that 25% of all damage you receive will also harm them for 15 seconds!  It’s a Reverse Beacon!  I see this being handy in PVP to cast on that pesky Druid or Pally Healer while their teammates are focusing their fire on you!  1 minute Cooldown.

Kil’jaeden’s Cunning - You can cast and Channel at the same time, but it will double the cast time or period of the spell.  My guess is this will also halve the damage you’d cause with a channelled spell so that the total damage comes out the same over the 2x length of time you are casting.

Illidan’s Guile - Shadowbolt, Incinerate, and Malefic Grasp deal splash Damage to all enemies within 10 yards of your target.  Lasts 30 seconds.  We thought you liked some AOE, so we gave you some AOE to go with your main attack so you could AOE when you wouldn’t normally get to AOE… or something to that effect…>.>  2 minute Cooldown.

**************************

Well that’s it for the Warlocks!  Next up is Warriors!  Hopefully I can get it done before Raid tomorrow… or I’m looking at a Friday release for it.  And THEN I have thoughts on the Item Squish of MoP that Ghostcrawler has posted on the Dev Watercooler last week.

I honestly don’t see where you all get the time to keep up on this Blogging thing!  and Twitter!  And actually get time to play!  @_@

Oh well, keep on those dailies and I’ll try to get myself back on track here!  See you next time!

Mists of Pandaria Talent Preview: Shaman

November 9th, 2011

Man I’m slow…  It’s been three weeks and I’m still trying to get these done!  3 more to go…

(C) Blizzard Entertainment 2011

So what we have next up are Shaman!  My experience with Shaman is quite limited.  I don’t think I even made level 20 on the one that I did start… but that was sometime during Wrath.  Since everything has been reworked, I’m going to have to try it again.  Will I get to it BEFORE MoP Hits?  Probably not, but it’s something else to add to my list of things to do!  In anycase, I’m not that familiar with the Current talents and abilities, so if I announce something like it’s new, and it’s been that way since vanilla… go easy on me…>.>

First Tier Talents

The First Tier seems to be about Crowd Control:

Frozen Power – Frost Shock will also Root the target in Ice for 5 seconds!

Earthgrab Totem – This will take the place of your Earthbind Totem.  The nifty thing here is that it will Root enemies for 5 seconds!  Recently Rooted enemeies will instead be slowed by 50%.

Repulsion Totem – Will summon an Air totem that will repel emeies.  Lasts for 15 seconds.  Does not have a Cooldown Listed, but I imagine that will change.

Second Tier Talents

The Second Tier is about Survivability:

Nature’s Guardian – Increases your maximum health by 15% and reduces threat whenever a damaging attack brings you below 35% health.  Can only happen once every 30 seconds.  Very PVE oriented with the threat reduction, but the increased maximum health can be useful anytime!  Doesn’t increase the healing you receive however.  Just gives you a higher top end health level.

Stone Bulwark Totem – Summons a Totem that will give you a shield and refresh the shield every 5 seconds for 30 seconds!  It has a 1 minute cooldown, so once the effect falls off, you only have to wait another 30 seconds till it is ready again!  I can see this being quite useful in both PVE and PVP.

Astral Shift – This one lets you shift into the astral plane reducing all damage you take by 50%.  However, you also lose 50% Healing and Damage done.  2 Minute Cooldown.

Third Tier Talents

The Third tier has some quality of life immunity effects for you:

Improved Ghost Wolf - No, you don’t get instant cast ghost wolf from this.  No, they decided to give ALL Shaman Instant Ghostwolf!  Instead, this makes you immune to snares.  Guess those little furry dog legs of yours are too slippery!

Windwalk Totem – Grants immunity to movement impairing effects to all Raid members (Party too…?) within 30 yards.  Lasts for 6 seconds, and has a 1 minute cooldown.  Sounds PVP-ish to me, but I can see this coming in handy for certain fights.

Tranquil Mind Totem – Grants immunity to Silence and spell interrupting efects to all raid members (Party too…?) within 30 yards.  Also lasts for 6 seconds with a 1 minute cooldown.  Personally, I see teams of Shaman using this one and the Windwalk Totems in tandem. In PVP of course.

Fourth Tier Talents

The Fourth Tier has a Lot of Group Heals in it:

Healing Tide Totem – Gives Shaman a Wild Growth type ability.  This Totem will last for 10 seconds, healing 5 nearby allies.

Ancestral Guidance – Instant cast ability that lasts for 10 seconds.  Any healing or damage you do will also heal a nearby ally for 40% of the healing/damage you do.  Almost like an unguided Beacon, since it doesn’t say you can focus it on a particular target.

Fortifying Waters – Allies standing in your healing Rain take a 10% magic damage reduction.  Doesn’t sound like much, but I’m sure that will add up on AOE heavy fights.

Fifth Tier Talents

Casting Throughput seems to be the theme for the Fifth Tier:

Elemental Mastery – Pretty much the same as the current talent.  You gain an instant cast Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Lava Burst, and then gain extra damage for Fire, Frost, and Nature damage AND 20% Spell Haste for 15 seconds.  3 Minute Cooldown.

Nature’s Swiftness – In addition to making your next spell an instant cast, will also passively give you 5% Spell Haste.  Of special note, the Cooldown has been lowered from 2 Minutes to 1 Minute!

Echo of the Elements – When casting a Damage or Healing spell, you have a chance to “Echo” that effect, in essence casing it a second time on the same target!  What that chance is like, it does not say…>.>

Sixth Tier Talents

And finally, we come to the Sixth Tier.  This tier is all about your Totems:

Elemental Harmony – Will allow you to cast multipleTtotems of the same Element!

Totemic Restoration – If a Totem is Destroyed or replaced before it’s duration expires naturally, its cooldown is reduced accordingly.

Totemic Projection – You can relocate your Active Totems to another area, without having to pick them back up and then drop them again!

****************************

So that’s all I have for the Shaman talents.  I’m sorry I don’t have much for Witty Commentary(tm) on them, but as I said before, I don’t have much experience as a Shaman.

That and I’ve taken about a week to get this one out and still have two more to go, and it’s been three weeks since Blizzcon, so I’m kinda feeling the pressure to finish these up!  Hope you are keeping up on your dailies… ’cause I haven’t been able to lately!  ^_^;;

Until next time!

~ Z/C
