I haven’t been much of an acheivement whore during my time in WoW, and really, if it comes right down to it, THIS ONE was the reason why! I guess it comes down to the fact that it intimidated me. And since “I’d NEVER get it,” why bother on the rest? Right?
For those of you not familiar with this acheivement, it requires you to do a few things in PVP Battlegrounds with your Orphan out during the Childrens’ Week Event:
- Warsong Gulch: Return a Dropped Flag
- Arathi Basin: Assault a Base Flag
- Alterac Valley: Assault a Tower
- Eye of the Storm: Capture a Flag
And not being the type to really play PVP all that often, this intimidated the hell outta me! I mean it REALLY. Intimidated. the HELL. outta me!
So if it was such a big deal, why the change and attempt it, you ask? I’m not sure, to tell the truth. But if you read my update last week, I looked Channi up on the Armory and didn’t like being in 6th place, so I tried to up my ranking. I’m currently in 4th place, and have over 1000 points to go in order to get into 3rd. Aside from working professions, and trying for Loremaster, one of the things I needed to make up points, is “Long Strange Trip,” and all the events that make it up. And Children’s week just happened at the right time, I guess!
So Channi here is my Second Ever Character, and really the main voice in my head for RP purposes. I’ve been playing her since Vanilla, and I apparently never did any acheivement related things on her for Children’s week. (Correction: I found I had the Frenzyheart Pup already, so I did the Dalaran event at least once!) Ok, Fresh start, not a Problem. I can Dooo Eeeet! I picked up Channi’s first Orphan in Stormwind and completed all his quests, and picked up Speedy the Turtle as a Companion! (Oh yeah, moar companion pets for Acheivements too!) I then picked up the Orphan Dreanei in Shattrath and decided I delayed enough, and the School of Hard Knocks was the last thing I needed for the acheivement.
What I SHOULD Have done was re-read @WoWCynwise’s wonderful Guide to the School of Hard Knocks. But I didn’t…. >.> I just jumped in and ran with it. Everything worked out for me though, so no worries!
First up was “Return a Dropped Flag in Warsong Gulch” – I’ve heard about BG’s that tried to work together to get the acheivement and hoped that would be the case. Not my first run. It was a slug fest despite people on both sides having their Orphans out. The good news was that we won 3-0! So I queued up again, and this time hung out in the Flag Room with my Orphan out. As luck would have it, the Tauren Druid that came to take our flag was one of the helpful types! He dropped in on top of the flag and repeatedly picked it up and dropped it for everyone in the flag room. I stopped attacking him as I realized what was going on and quickly returned a Flag and logged out of there before it got nasty again! (Yeah, I’m an acheivement desserter, so what!)
Next up was “Assault a Flag in Arathi Basin” – As I had the Desserter debuff on me, I did some fishing for a while until I realized could have gone back in an hour ago! Then queued for AB. I came into an AB already in Progress, and attempted the BS, but the Hordies weren’t having anything to do with that! So I went to LM, and helped defend. Somehow I ended up being the only one there and lo and behold a couple Hordies came up and took LM. As I respawned, I was able to take advantage of the others that came up to take it back and was able to get this part of the achievement as well! This time I stuck it out as we were on track to win and came out with a few extra honor points, and avoided the debuff as well. Two down! Two to go!
Now was a tough decision to make… Eye of the Storm which I think I’d been in maybe twice before when it was new… or AV that is usually pretty easy to do? Might as well get the harder one out of the way first. I went for Eye of the Storm.
Did I mention it was going to be harder? I rode straight out to the middle and grabbed the flag. Others ran to a base and capped it while I was on route with the flag and Lo’ and Behold, BAM! Flag capped! I stuck this one out as well and then it was easy peasey AV for complete the Event and get my title! This was going to be a cinch!
Only not. EVERYONE Was working on that acheivement…! (See the Picture at the top of this post! DAMN That’s a Lot of Orphans!) We won the AV, but I didn’t get anywhere NEAR assaulting a tower. The Good news was that I found @Arrens’ One Fan in there!
In my second one however, When I got to the tower, there was a Lone Hordie in there just recapping the tower after each of us assaulted it! Acheivement Complete!
Many Thanks to whoever you helpful Hordies were! It takes a strength of character that you don’t see everyday to be able to help others get their goals accomplished. Especially when there is the communication barrier AND we are supposed to be FIGHTING EACHOTHER in order to complete them!
So what Have I learned by doing this? A – Always Read Cynwise’s posts before attempting anything PVP Related! And B – Don’t sweat it. You REALLY CAN do this! I made the mistake of looking at it as “PVP CRAP” and let it overwhelm me before I even set foot in there. Sometimes it’s just best to jump in with both feet and Just DO it! And it can be fun in the process to boot!
And that got me thinking, It takes a lot of teamwork to do things like this. On both sides of the faction divide. Without the help of a couple of random players on the opposing side, I wouldn’t be writing this post right now. That bears recognition. The best recognition I can think of (since I forgot to note their names/realms, like a baddie) is to pay it forward. And maybe later on down the line, someone else will do the same thing again. And again….
That’s it for me for now. Good luck to you in your achievements! YOU CAN DOOOO EEET!
Thanks for stopping by!
