Fangs of the Father!

“Precioussss…. My Precioussss!”

It’s true… I am no longer a Legendary Virgin! I finally got the [Fangs of the Father] last week Thursday (6/7/2012) after what seemed to be a LONG time coming!

I don’t know how many of you remember when the Legendary Daggers were first announced, but @_Rades over at Orcish Army Knife had come up with some interesting theories about what they were about. You can check out the article here.

Now, he didn’t QUITE get it right on that post, but he did come THISCLOSE to getting it! It wasn’t any ONE of the theories, but a combination of the first one and the last one! [Fangs of the Father] were pieces of Deathwing, yes, but it was the “hatchling” from the egg that Rhea had you rescue in the Badlands, that put you on the quest to go get them! So from a pure speculation standpoint, you don’t get much closer than that!  (I still wonder why Blizzard hasn’t hired him yet…)

What did I think of the Questline? Was it EPIC? Was it Worthy of Legedary Status? Considering this was my first ever Legendary, I may not totally qualified to say. But I do have a saying: “It wouldn’t be Epic, if it were easy!” I liked the story behind them. I think the game needs more of this long quest chain with built in story! I miss Class quests, and this very much was a Class quest. I like the idea behind long chains and getting really cool rewards from them as well! I never got a battered hilt, which is something I still want to do. And I felt cheated out of Shadowmourne on my DK as I didn’t know anything about how to get it, and had no way of running in a 25 Man Raid even if I did know about it. It was out of reach and just felt like it was someting that only the top end Heroic-mode raiders could complete. I finally came across the beginning of the quest chain somewhere around 3-4 weeks before Cataclysm came out. As a result, I didn’t even bother. (Maybe in 2 or 3 more expansions I can solo/two-box it…? /shrug)

So getting the chance to complete this quest REALLY hit home for me! It was tough, and not just from the perspective of completing the quests. When this came up, I was one of my Raid’s Main Tanks, and I had to convince them to let me do this! Luckily, we have an Awesome Sub-Tank (Galedorin) that steps in if Myself or Lightlance can’t be there. So he was able to take up the Tanking Duties that I shirked to work on these shiny things… I mean, uh… Thank you Gale! Much appreciated!

Thankfully, we also didn’t have a Rogue, and no one else had a Rogue Alt to run through this quest. I was the only one!

Secondarily, we didn’t get the chance to complete a Legendary from Firelands. I think this helped them want to get a Legendary completed of SOMEKIND! It didn’t matter which one, as long as it was a current Legendary!  We still may go back to help complete one or two, but I haven’t heard any details on that.  Be it known, I’m perfectly willing to help someone get that completed!  So if anyone wants a Melee DPS or Tank to run through FireLands, let me know when! (Alternately, I also ahve a Warlock and a Ret/Holy Pally that might be able to help, but we’ll see what’s needed first.)

Now the problem for me was that I could only run the Rogue on Bosses we were farming. During the early stages, that was basically, the first half of the Raid. New Bosses, I had to run the DK. So I didn’t get the opportunity to collect gems from the later half of the Raid until after we downed Deathwing. So from a collection standpoint, I was going slower than most anyone else on this quest.  But hey! I was able to progress it at least, right?!

But there were a couple other issues that became apparent as a result of the arrangements we had. 1 – I had to pass on Gear Upgrades for the Rogue until the regular raid members didn’t need them. And we had 2 Feral Druids, a Mage, and a Hunter. If it was tier based, or agility based, I had a minimum of 2 other people I had to wait on to be able to get my hands on something!  HELLO LFR! Sure, they weren’t the best upgrades, but they helped! At least until I could get Valor Point upgrades. And those held me over until I could get my Tier pieces, so no worries there.

2 – Running my Rogue through most of DS kept my DK from aquiring upgrades as well. I had to make do with Valor and crafted upgrades for the most part.  But again, once we downed Deathwing, and I was allowed to run the rogue full time, I was able to sub-tank for my wife’s raid and was finally able to get my Tier pieces! So it all worked out!

Overall, I think I’d give the Quest Chain a B+. It contained some nice solid Lore and interaction. It brought back the feeling of having a Class Quest. But it was also LOOOONNNGGG…. if you were lucky enough to get to Hagara the first week and pick her pocket, that’s one week.  Pay out your 10K gold, and kill the guy in Gilneas and you have your first stage daggers!  After that, you have 8-9 weeks of gathering if you clear the entire raid starting on the second week, followed by another 8 weeks of gathering after you get the second stage daggers.  That’s 18 weeks IF everything went right for you. (This is all based on 10-man content.  I do not know how different it was for 25-man.)

I think it took us two weeks to get to Hagara, and then it was a feverish weekend to get the Gilneas kill.  Then we weren’t clearing every boss in the beginning, and I was only gathering from the first half of the Raid.  It wasn’t until Mid-March that we killed Deathwing, and I was able to start collecting gems full time.  Then it was 4 weeks later in April that I was able to start on the Second stage gathering quest.  Then it was another 8 weeks till I completed that and received my New Shinies!

I just looked at the Patch notes for 4.3, and it went live at the end of November… 27 weeks from the Patch going live to me completing the Legendaries.  That’s a LONG time to work on a quest chain and Raid Instance.  Granted there were holidays in there so I can’t count all the weeks, but still  even if I just call it 24 weeks, that’s about 6 months.  I can’t help but think Blizzard could have kept it shorter, but they needed people to stick around in game and keep them playing until Panda-land came out.

Are they worth it?  I don’t know yet.  Last night we ran Heroic BoT instead of DS, but I did notice a nice uptick in my DPS!  AND I can say that I’m now one of the 1%!

Unfortunately, my wife hasn’t completed her set yet, but she should complete them in Mid-July!  Then I can finally share my Joy with completing these with the one person that I REALLY wanted to share them with!

Now, Channi was my second ever character that I rolled. (Not counting a deleted bank alt.)  Ever since I started playing her, she has been my Main.  I rolled the DK on Feathermoon when my wife transferred there, as I didn’t have the cash to bring her over.  I changed her story to allow for the DK to take over her story, but there was always something missing.  I finally transferred her over from Argent Dawn last year, but no one needed a Melee DPS for anything.  So the DK rolled along and the rogue bided her time.

Now don’t get me wrong, I seriously do Love my DK, and tanking on her is a Blast!  But I missed my Rogue still and was afraid I’d not get to really play her again.  So for my raid team to allow me to do this means a lot to me, and I want to say to them again, Thank you!  You guys are the BEST!  I don’t know what Pandaria holds in store for us, but I do know that a few of them will not be coming back.  For those that will continue on, I look forward to even more adventures with you!  For those that say that Pandaria will be the end of the road, I’ll be sad to see you go, but I’ll always have these to help me remember you all!

Thank you all again!

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Wrathion…

  2. Thank you much! With any luck we can get some SWU guild dungeons ran and you can see them in action! XD

  3. Sarai says:

Grats!! So glad you got these, and hopefully Lore will have no trouble getting hers!

I really ought to get my pally into SWU, then we’ll have a reason to do guild stuff. And we’ll have a tank! (Once I finish leveling and get geared, at least…)

  4. We do have a tank… My DK! Plus I’m sure Tarelyn as well as a couple others. But, yes! more SWU Folks would rock!
